Following an injury sustained while playing for Atalanta in the Italian Cup final, Netherlands midfielder Marten de Roon has been ruled out of the UEFA Euro 2024, the Dutch football association announced in a statement on Monday.
The 33-year-old midfielder for Atalanta sustained an injury to his muscle during the team’s 1-0 loss to Juventus in the final two weeks ago. As a result, he won’t be ready for the competition in Germany.
De Roon set to sit out
Due to his absence, he was unable to witness Atalanta’s 3-0 victory over German champions Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final last Wednesday in Dublin.
“I can’t imagine I’ve had a week in my career, or in my life, that has had so many ups and downs. Lost the Coppa Italia, couldn’t play the final, win the Europa League,” De Roon posted on social media on Monday.
“In that last euphoric state, I spent a lot of time with the medical staff: it turns out I can’t play the Euros.

“I will get over it, I will watch the squad and my friends as a fan, but for now it’s a very tough day,” he added.
Netherlands final squad to be out soon
De Roon participated in the most recent Euros and the World Cup in Qatar, earning 42 caps for the Netherlands. On Wednesday, Dutch coach Ronald Koeman will make the final selection for Euro 2024. Following De Roon’s withdrawal, 29 players make up the pre-selection, and three are expected to be cut from the travelling squad.
