‘ Main focus is AFC’ Juan Ferrando sets priorities straight after Kolkata Derby loss

After losing the Kolkata Derby, Mohun Bagan Super Giants coach Juan Ferrando stated that their emphasis is on the AFC Cup 2023 Qualifiers Preliminary Round.

On Saturday, August 12, East Bengal FC defeated Mohun Bagan Super Giant 1-0 in their Durand Cup 2023 encounter. The Kolkata Derby was billed as a one-sided affair. The Mariners’ roster suggested that it would be a walk in the park for Juan Ferrando’s team. However, the reigning ISL Champions suffered a surprise defeat. Coach Juan Ferrando, however, believed that Mohun Bagan’s tight schedule with 3 tournaments – CFL, Durand Cup and AFC Cup- has impacted the performance. However the coach relayed that their importance is on AFC Cup 2023 Qualifiers Preliminary Round.

“This is a disappointing result for us. As I told we are playing three tournaments together. All the players are in pre-season and are practicing every day to be at their best.” said Juan Ferrando.

Mohun Bagan has reclaimed first place in Calcutta Football League Group A. Taking on a struggling Food Corporation of India, the Mariners cruised to a 5-0 victory to maintain their fine streak. With 20 goals so far in the CFL 2023, the reigning ISL winners have been an attacking powerhouse. Suhail Ahmad Bhat has been the team’s standout performer, scoring the majority of the goals. This includes a hat trick.

What was notable this time was that numerous players from the development team, including as Suhail Bhat, Sumit Rathi, and Kiyan Nassiri, were also named to the Durand Cup roster.
