Hugo Bueno, the left back for the visitors, went down holding his hamstring midway through the first half and was replaced by Rayan Ait-Nouri, despite creating the game’s first shot on goal. Harvey Elliott, a young Liverpool midfielder, had the finest opportunities in the first 45 minutes. He sent a header narrowly wide in the 39th minute and then struck awkwardly in stoppage time, which was blocked for a corner.
Ten minutes into the second half, the 19-year-old was right back in the middle of things. He controlled a hard pass from Darwin Nunez and sent another effort towards goal, but it once again lacked the requisite force and accuracy and was easily saved by Jose Sa.

Following a strong run by Diogo Jota, Nunez put the ball in the back of the net for the home team in the 66th minute. But, a VAR review determined that the Portugal striker had fouled Max Kilman in the buildup, and the goal was disallowed.
In the 73rd minute, Van Dijk finally scored, forcing a save with his initial header from a corner kick. Jota then redirected the rebound across the goal, allowing the Netherlands international to head in from close range. Four minutes later, Salah doubled Liverpool’s lead and put the visitors’ chances of winning in jeopardy by using his right thigh to direct home a cross from Kostas Tsimikas.
