Liverpool vs Man United: Recently crowned EFL League Cup champions, Manchester United might miss their star defender Raphael Varane in the clash against Liverpool on Sunday. Famously known as the North-West Derby, the history of the game is very rich and none of the teams want to end up on the losing side. This season, Manchester United have surely been in better form when compared to Liverpool, which makes them the favorite to win the game on 5th March. However, Liverpool’s form at Anfield cannot be ignored. The Red Devils have not won a game at Anfield in the last 7-years. On top of that, United might be without Raphael Varane due to an injury.

After a not-very-impactful first season at Old Trafford, Varane has now established himself in the starting XI along with Lisandro Martinez. Notably, the 29-years old defender came back early in November from an injury to participate in the Qatar World Cup. Since then, he has been playing consistently for United this season and helped them clinch their first trophy since 2017. The recent leg pain might be an outcome of fatigue as the Red Devils are constantly playing 2 games per week and Varane’s appearance is in most of them.
If United loses Varane against Liverpool, it is more likely that Victor Lindelof will replace him ahead of Harry Maguire. Luke Shaw has also been seen playing a central defender role, but he has mostly filled the shoes of Lisandro Martinez. United’s Erik Ten Hag prefers playing one central defender who can carry the ball forward or make those long passes, which Martinez does on most occasions.
Liverpool will be seeking revenge against Manchester United, who handed them a defeat earlier this season by 2-1 at Old Trafford in August 2022. The win will boost Liverpool’s hope for a top 4 finish this season.
