Liverpool stages dramatic comeback to sink Brighton 2-1 at Anfield

Liverpool staged a spirited comeback, overturning Brighton’s lead with goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah, securing a crucial 2-1 victory and maintaining title momentum.

Liverpool made an impressive comeback to beat Brighton 2-1 at Anfield, keeping up their strong form under new manager Arne Slot. Trailing 1-0 at half-time, the Reds found their stride in the second half with Cody Gakpo (70′) and Mohamed Salah (72′) scoring to turn the game in their favour on Monday night at Premier League, taking three crucial points to be at the top of the table.

First half dominance from Brighton

Brighton controlled much of the first half, silencing the Anfield crowd with a well-taken goal by Ferdi Kadioglu. His powerful strike from 16 yards struck the inside of the post, putting the visitors ahead and looking to capitalize on Liverpool’s slow start. Brighton could have extended their lead, but Liverpool’s goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher produced a crucial save to deny Georginio Rutter.

Liverpool fight backs

Liverpool came out stronger in the second half, pushing for an equaliser. Substitute Joe Gomez nearly made an impact with a close-range header, and Virgil van Dijk missed a great chance to level. But Liverpool’s breakthrough came when Gakpo’s cross from the left wing sailed straight into the net, marking his third goal against Brighton within four days.

Salah’s magic seals the win

Just three minutes later, Mohamed Salah worked his magic, curling a stunning shot from the right side of the box into the far corner to complete Liverpool’s comeback. This goal not only secured the win but showcased Liverpool’s resilience under pressure. From there, Liverpool controlled the game, rarely looking like they would surrender their lead.

Despite the loss, Brighton had plenty to be proud of. Manager Fabian Hurzeler, the Premier League’s youngest manager, has built on the team’s promising style. They showed quality in the first half, with Kaoru Mitoma and Kadioglu combining for a brilliant opening goal. Yet, they couldn’t sustain their momentum as Liverpool grew into the match.

Liverpool continues strong under slot

With this win, Liverpool moves two points clear of Manchester City and maintains their momentum under Slot, having won 13 of their last 15 matches. The Reds look determined to challenge for the title, while Brighton, though falling short today, remains a team to watch in the Premier League.
