The Bluebirds were furious with the officiating again moments after the break when Mark Harris was brought down on the edge of the box by an onrushing Caoimhín Kelleher but was only booked when there were appeals for a red card.

And right on cue after that incident, the Reds hit the front when Diogo Jota directed an excellent header into the corner from a Trent Alexander-Arnold free-kick.

Elliott then made his long-awaited return from injury off the bench and was joined by Díaz for a debut and it didn’t take him long to make an impact as he won possession from Perry Ng and then teed up Takumi Minamino to score for a quick Anfield assist.

Not to be outdone though, Elliott then marked his comeback with a goal with a superb snap volley finish after good control in the area to send Liverpool through to a fifth round date with Norwich, a late Rubin Colwill goal proving only to be a Cardiff consolation.
