Defender Lisandro Martinez of Manchester United reported that surgery went well after being told he would miss the rest of the season due to a fractured metatarsal bone. Martinez, who played 45 times for United this season across all competitions, was helped off the pitch during their 2-2 Europa League loss with Sevilla.

Martinez wrote on Instagram that the procedure “went incredibly well” and that he was now concentrating on his rehabilitation. The defender said, Everything went really well, thanks to God! Many thanks for all of your messages. Now focusing on the recovery.

Martinez has been a vital cog in United’s team this season so far. He has been playing in the heart of the defense and will now miss an important part of United’s season, as they look to secure top 4 in the Premier League. They are also in the semi-finals of the FA Cup and will be looking to bag another trophy, after the Carabao Cup.

Manchester United injury list

The absence of Marcel Sabitzer and Tyrell Malacia before Sunday’s 2-0 victory against Nottingham Forest made Manchester United’s injury issue worse. The two have joined a handful of United players out injured for the vital final six weeks of the season. Diogo Dalot was switched to left defender in place of Malacia, who was unable to make the matchday squad due to a sore knee.

Marcel Sabitzer was forced to be replaced by Christian Eriksen after reporting a problem during the warm-up. In addition to Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Scott McTominay, and other players who have missed the last few games, Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane were also forced off against Sevilla last week; the former was out for the season.

With three tournaments to contend for and as many as 13 games remaining between now and June, the situation at United has only gotten worse as a result of the most recent injury. Erik ten Hag will be hoping that some of the players who are now out will be able to play in Thursday’s second leg of the Europa League in Seville.
