After Argentina’s undefeated streak came to an end, Lionel Messi openly criticised Uruguayan players for their disrespectful behaviour. The match, part of the fifth round of South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, resulted in a 2-0 victory for Uruguay, ending the hosts’ spotless record.

Every Argentina vs Uruguay game is heated, at the very least. This game too got heated up in moments and there was a brawl that broke out too. Images show Lionel Messi grabbing onto an opponent’s throat as well. After the game, Leo did not mince his words about Uruguay’s behavior.

Lionel Messi speaks about the Uruguay game

During Argentina vs Uruguay, several altercations occurred, culminating in a particularly contentious confrontation involving Uruguay’s Manuel Ugarte and Argentina’s Rodrigo De Paul. Ugarte was observed making an obscene gesture towards De Paul during one of the many clashes.

According to SportsKeeda, Lionel Messi chose not to specifically remark on the specific gesture in his post-match interview, instead delivering a larger condemnation.

Lionel Messi said, ‘I prefer not to say what I think about some gestures. But these young people have to learn to respect from their elders. This game was always intense and hard but always with a lot of respect. They have to learn a little bit.’

Messi’s Argentina suffer first defeat after 25 games

Argentina, captained by Lionel Messi, tasted defeat for the first time on Thursday, their first since the World Cup final loss to Saudi Arabia. It has been nearly a year – just six days shy, since they last experienced the agony of losing, which occurred during their World Cup debut in Qatar, almost a year ago.

The match ended 2-0 at La Bombonera, with Uruguay emerging victorious in a surprising loss. In addition to Argentina’s defeat, the game was noteworthy because it marked the first time since their infamous World Cup final against France that Argentina had given up goals.

Darwin Nunez and Maxi Araujo’s goals broke through La Albiceleste’s unbeatable defence, signalling a momentous occasion. Argentina made a lot of effort in the last minutes of the game. But they were unable to overtake Uruguay’s lead.

Even though he once rattled the net and created other opportunities, Lionel Messi was unable to provide the kind of performance that was needed to lead his team to victory. Even if his efforts were praiseworthy, they were insufficient to reverse the outcome of the game.

Looking at the bigger picture, Argentina won’t be too worried about this loss. They have been in really good form ever since their World Cup triumph. Both teams are also expected to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Nonetheless, it has undoubtedly destroyed the world champs’ aura of invincibility.
