As the Argentine national team prepares for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Brazil, Albiceleste fans have been ecstatic to learn that sportswear giants Adidas are set to release a retro collection of their famous Argentina jersey. And who else would be their star model for this announcement, it would be Lionel Messi. Inter Miami’s #10 stunned fans with the beautiful dark blue jersey.

Lionel Messi stuns fans in retro Argentina jersey

Adidas will be dropping a new retro collection very soon. This will feature a hooded top, t-shirt and track pants with a throwback feel. But the creme of the collection is undoubtedly a remake of the famous blue away shirt that Argentina wore at the 1994 USA World Cup. Lionel Messi was seen copping the new jersey and it looks very sleek.

The South American team memorably wore the shirt in their Group D opening against Greece in Foxborough. In that game, Diego Maradona scored his final international goal. He also celebrated with his classic stare to camera celebration in the blue jersey. Sadly though, Maradona would later test positive for a banned substance in the next game (against Nigeria) and his career with the Albiceleste was brought to an abrupt end.

The soon to be released shirt is also accompanied by a 90’s inspired track top which was also modelled by Lionel Messi. Adidas also launched a casual retro Argentina range that features a slate t- shirt, track pants and zip up top.

The 1994 FIFA World Cup marked the final time that the Diego Maradona represented his country on the stage. Hence, it should not come as a surprise that fans are nostalgic after seeing Lionel Messi wearing the iconic jersey.

One fan said, ‘The kit Maradona wore in his last world cup in 1994. The kit 2022 #WorldCup winning coach Lionel Scaloni wore as a #U20WC winner in 1997.’

Messi FC Barcelona return on the cards?

After winning his historic eighth Ballon d’Or, Lionel Messi was asked if he could return to FC Barcelona in the future. The #10 dropped a very exciting update as well.

Many thought Lionel Messi could return to his former home club, FC Barcelona, after his extension at Paris-Saint-Germain was ruled out early this year. He spent his whole life at the Spanish club and only had to move due to the club’s financial issues. Messi didn’t move, though, because in July, the great football player transferred to Inter Miami, an MLS team.

When he was asked if he would be interested in moving back to FC Barcelona, Lionel Messi had an interesting answer. He said, ‘I don’t know. I really don’t know. Obviously, I would love to be able to say goodbye to the people in a different way. Because I think there was a weird feeling when I left, and I think it’s not good with everything that we shared and lived, along with everything that they gave me.’

Lionel Messi continued, ‘I told the club that we shouldn’t finish in the way we have finished. I think I deserve to be able to say goodbye to those people that we have shared so much joy and sadness throughout my career at Barcelona, in my home. I love the club, I love the people of Barcelona and well, so be it. I’m delighted I could be there, obviously.’
