Lionel Messi’s MLS Debut postponed, Inter Miami face Charlotte FC in Leagues Cup

Lionel Messi's MLS debut has been postponed; instead, Inter Miami will meet Charlotte FC in the Leagues Cup before the league season begins.

Lionel Messi MLS Debut: Lionel Messi must wait a few more days before making his Major League Soccer debut. Inter Miami’s Aug. 20 home match against Charlotte FC was rescheduled for a later date. For it has long been anticipated that this would be Messi’s debut appearance in MLS.

 In a statement, Inter Miami wrote: “Our regular season MLS match on August 20th against Charlotte FC has been postponed to a later date to be announced due to progression within the Leagues Cup. Tickets originally purchased for the Aug. 20 MLS match will be honored for the new date in which the game will be played.”

In the Leagues Cup round of 16, the Argentine scored twice in an eight-goal thriller between Inter Miami and FC Dallas. Messi’s team advanced to the quarterfinals after a 5-3 penalty shootout victory. They will play Charlotte FC next. It’s the side they were meant to face in their next MLS matchup.

Because the two teams will meet in the League Cup’s last eight, their MLS match has been formally postponed to a later date. It was supposed to happen on August 20. However, the release date of the new game is yet to be determined and will be announced in due time.

Messi’s first MLS appearance now appears to be against the New York Red Bulls on August 26. Before that, Miami will play FC Cincinnati in a U.S. Open Cup semifinal on Aug. 23.

Miami and its new No. 10 have been having a fantastic season in the Leagues Cup. This year, for the first time, every MLS and Liga MX team was represented. Messi has seven goals in four games in the competition since joining on a free transfer. In addition, he assisted Miami in reaching the last eight.

When Messi finally makes his MLS debut, the pressure will be on. Miami is now at the bottom of the Eastern Conference. There are only 12 games left to turn things around and secure a postseason spot.
