Lionel Messi’s quest for another Copa America 2024 title got a scare, but Argentina ultimately emerged victorious. The reigning champions edged past Ecuador 1-1 (4-2 on penalties) in a dramatic quarter-final clash at NRG Stadium, Houston.
Lionel Messi missed penalty
All eyes were on Lionel Messi as he stepped up to take the first penalty. In a move that surprised many, he attempted a delicate chipped effort. Unfortunately, the ball rattled the crossbar and bounced away, handing Ecuador a glimmer of hope.
However, Messi’s miss didn’t faze his teammates. Argentina, battle-tested champions, dug deep and responded magnificently. Julian Alvarez, Alexis Mac Allister, Gonzalo Montiel, and Nicolás Otamendi all converted their penalties, while Argentina’s goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, nicknamed “Dibu”, denied two out of Ecuador’s three attempts.
Argentina vs Ecuador: Match of Two Halves
The game itself was a tale of two halves. Argentina seemed on course for a comfortable victory after Lisandro Martínez headed home from a Messi corner kick in the 35th minute. Ecuador, though, had other plans. A dramatic late equalizer from Kevin Rodríguez in the 91st minute sent the game to penalties.
Night of Missed Opportunities
Despite the dramatic ending, the match was a low-scoring affair. Enner Valencia had a golden opportunity to equalize for Ecuador from a penalty in the 62nd minute, but his effort cannoned off the post.
Lionel Messi himself had a quiet night, failing to score for the second consecutive game. He did, however, set up the opening goal and broke the record for most minutes played in Copa America history.
Familiar Foe Awaits in Copa America semis
Argentina now progress to the semi-finals, where they will face the winner of the clash between Venezuela and Canada. This victory marks another step towards defending their Copa America crown, and Messi’s dream of adding another international trophy to his cabinet remains alive.
