The angry fans of St Etienne were seen approaching the pitch with flares and then shockingly chasing players in anger after they lost to AJ Auxerre in the relegation playoff final. Shocking scenes at full-time between St Etienne vs AJ Auxerre –
- St Etienne were beaten in a penalty by Auxerre in the relegation/promotion play-off and will play in France’s second-tier next season.
- At full-time, angry fans ran onto the pitch, chasing their own players down the tunnel.
- Flares were launched at the fleeing footballers as they ran towards safety.
- Some players were still out on the pitch and needed to be guided off the playing area by security.
Serious damage to the stadium –
- Riot police helped clear the pitch but the fans caused serious damage. According to RMC, and as quoted by Get French Football News, seats were being burned in the stands, which the fire brigade put out.
- Although no human casualty is reported the angry fans were seen to have caused the damage to the club’s property.
- The France Football Federation (FFF) is also expected to intervene in matter as strict action is expected in the coming days.

Club statement after relegation –
The club released a statement after the scenes and stated “If we ever committed errors in the past season, we have never stopped working to ensure the longevity of Saint-Étienne, including on the financial situation, which will allow it to compete in Ligue 2 next season.”
St Etienne are expected to be sold to David Blitzer’s multi-club group in the coming days.
