Kylian Mbappe scores first-ever goal in Euro as Les Bleus play out cagey draw against Poland

Kylian Mbappe stepped up and calmly slotted home, marking his first goal of the tournament and the first for France at Euro 2024

In a dramatic encounter in Dortmund, France and Poland played to a 1-1 draw, with penalties from Kylian Mbappé and Robert Lewandowski deciding the match. This result sees France finishing second in Group D, setting up a clash with the Group E runners-up in UEFA Euro 2024 Round of 16.

First Half Stalemate

The first half saw France dominating possession but failing to break through Poland’s resolute defense. Polish goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski was in fine form, making several key saves to keep France at bay. The French attack, led by Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, and Bradley Barcola, created numerous chances but couldn’t find the back of the net.

Kylian Mbappe Breaks the Deadlock

The breakthrough came in the 56th minute when Jakub Kiwior’s clumsy challenge on Ousmane Dembélé earned France a penalty. Kylian Mbappe stepped up and calmly slotted home, marking his first goal of the tournament and the first for France at Euro 2024. This goal seemed to put France on course for victory, but Poland had other plans.

Robert Lewandowski Levels the Score

Poland responded in the 79th minute after Dayot Upamecano fouled Karol Swiderski in the box. Despite Maignan saving Lewandowski’s initial penalty, VAR ruled the French goalkeeper had moved off his line prematurely. Given a second chance, Lewandowski made no mistake, slotting home via the woodwork to level the score.

The draw highlighted France’s struggles in the tournament so far. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, they lacked the clinical finishing needed to secure a win. The French squad, filled with talent, seemed disjointed and unable to capitalize on their opportunities. Mbappé, despite his goal, was denied multiple times by Skorupski, showcasing France’s inefficiency in front of goal.
