The much anticipated Kolkata Derby stands cancelled. The Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal crucial encounter has been abandoned and not postponed. This is owing to the massive protests that have been occurring in the city. There were major doubts if the mouth watering encounter would take place, following the massive protests that are taking place city wide.
“On behalf of the Durand Cup Organizing Committee, this is to regretfully inform you that the final Group A fixture between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Emami East Bengal FC, scheduled to be played at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on August 18, 2024 at 7.00pm, stands abandoned.” The Durand Cup said in a statement.
Kolkata Derby Cancelled!
The Kolkata Derby stands called cancelled and not postponed. As a result it is highly likely that points will be shared between the two arch rivals. As for the fans, the ticket prices will be fully refunded. The clubs and the committee are slated to provide more details about the refunding in the coming days.
With both the points being shared, the two teams will make it to the next stage. Mohun Bagan will be adjudged as the table toppers with 7 points but with a greater goal difference.
Reports have emerged that the knockout matches that are scheduled to take place in Kolkata will be shifted to Jamshedpur. The Durand Cup is slated to conclude on 31st August 2024.
