King Charles Coronation: Champions League: King Charles III was formally crowned at Westminster Abbey on Saturday. Notably, Handel composed “Zadok the Priest” for King George II’s coronation in 1727. The piece has been played at every coronation since. Although the initial composition had no lyrics, the words “the champions” were added by Tony Britten in 1992 to mark the inauguration of the Champions League.
However, Britten clarified in 2020 that the tune was not picked from Handel. The composer explained that the first writing string phrase was used as the basis, and the rest was his own work.
There will be no early kick-off on Saturday in the UK to avoid clashes with the ceremony, but there are several games scheduled later in the day, with the FA urging clubs to play the national anthem to mark the occasion.
However, Liverpool fans have previously booed the anthem, which has caused concern about how they would react during the ceremony. Liverpool is set to play Brentford today at home.
