Kerala Blasters Ban: Bengaluru FC vs Kerala Blasters REPLAY Request: Kerala Blasters’ petition, which demanded a repeat of their contentious match against Bengaluru FC in the ISL Knockout last week, has been rejected by the All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) disciplinary tribunal. The Ivan Vukomanovic-led Blasters left the field in protest after what they saw to be an unfair decision by referee Crystal John allowed Sunil Chhetri to score a contentious goal and give Bengaluru the lead. The team subsequently filed a protest, asking for a rematch and a refereeing ban.  Follow Indian Super League and ISL 2022-23 LIVE Updates on InsideSport.IN.

AIFF’s disciplinary panel, chaired by Vaibhav Gaggar, convened on an emergency basis late on Monday to hear from all stakeholders, including four Kerala Blasters representatives. A statement is anticipated to be released on Tuesday as a result of the panel’s decision to end the protest. Kerala Blasters were instructed to present the panel with a clear copy of the rules that demonstrate the official’s error. Nothing in the (IFAB) rulebook indicated that the referee made a mistake.

Bengaluru FC vs Kerala Blasters FC: What Exactly Happened?

  • When Chettri was released down the right flank, the Blasters bench yelled angrily that he was offside. After some back and forth, the move went forward.
  • Chhetri was pulled down in the middle of the field, right outside the penalty area.
  • The Blasters defence was forming a wall while the referee remained at the location marking it out.
  • Chhetri looked up at the referee while the Blasters goalkeeper stood far from his line and attempted to set it up.
  • Everything but the ball stood still for a brief period of time.
  • The moment the ball went into the goal, everyone stopped moving.
  • Crystal John, the official, awarded the goal. Ivan Vukomanovic came onto the field in a rage and started yelling at John.
  • He phoned his squad and left after realising the referee wouldn’t reverse his decision.
  • At the corner flag closest to the tunnel, Bengaluru waited.
  • Bengaluru remained on the field while officials unsuccessfully attempted to have a conversation with the Blasters’ team.

Blasters captain Adrian Luna testified before the committee during the hearing that the referee had urged him to “go back” when he was preventing Chhetri from executing a swift free-kick. As a result of Luna’s mistaken assumption that those were instructions to back off, Chhetri was able to score and give his team the lead. John, the referee, said before the panel during the hearing that his decision to permit the goal was compliant with the rules.

Blasters have received a charge notice from AIFF in the meantime for the walkout, which is a violation punishable by Article 58 of the AIFF Disciplinary Code. In accordance with Article 58.1, if a team refuses to participate in a match or continue one that has already started, the punishment may be a fine of “at least rupees six lakh,” and in serious cases, the offence is aggravated with a “penalty of rupees six lakh and disqualification from a competition in progress and/or exclusion from a future competition.” A response from the club is required by March 12th.
