The midfielder joined the blue side of Manchester City in 2022 but has been mostly on the bench. Rodri has been the go-to man as the lone defensive midfielder for Guardiola, resulting in Kalvin Phillips finding it hard to break into the first team.
Kalvin Phillips started only two games in the Premier League last season. He only featured for a total of 290 minutes in 12 top-flight games, while he appeared 21 times in all competitions as City completed the Treble.
The England international started in the Blue Lions’ 3-1 win against Italy on Tuesday but failed to impress.
Speaking to BBC after the match, he acknowledged the fact the he needs to be playing more minutes to claim a spot in the England starting line-up in the 2024 Euros.
He said, “Over the last year and a half I haven’t been able to do that due to injuries and other factors. It’s something I am going to have to think about.
“Hopefully my chance does come but if it doesn’t then I will have to make other decisions as well.
“I know that I need to be playing games and competing every weekend. I’m going to have to make a decision on my City future over the next months,” he said.
Coming to the match, England qualified for the 2024 Euro Cup by beating Italy 3-1 on Tuesday. Brace from Harry Kane and a goal from Marcus Rashford cancelled out Italy’s opener by Gianluca Scamacca. Jude Bellingham was instrumental in the wing again, providing two assists and taking the Man of the Match award home.
