“It’s coming home” chants will be reverberating across whole England as the anticipation for the Euro 2024 finals shoots up. It would be a cherry on top for them if they upstage Spain and their talismanic striker Harry Kane takes home the Euro 2024 Golden Boot as well. Well, the chances of winning him bagging the prestigious individual trophy have been boosted by a late rule change announced by UEFA.
Who is current contender for Euros Golden Boot?
The England captain heads into Sunday’s final against Spain as the joint top scorer with three goals, alongside Dani Olmo, Cody Gakpo, Jamal Musiala, Ivan Schranz, and Georges Mikautadze. However, under the previous system, Olmo would have won the award due to his two assists.
Previously, UEFA awarded the Golden Boot to the player with the most assists in the case of a tie on goals scored. This happened at Euro 2020, where Cristiano Ronaldo edged out Patrick Schick for the award thanks to one extra assist despite both players scoring five goals each.
How Harry Kane could benefit now!
Ahead of the final, UEFA announced a new rule. The Golden Boot will now be shared between all players who finish level on goals scored. This means if Kane and Olmo both remain on three goals, they will be joint Golden Boot winners.
The change benefits Kane, who only needs one goal to claim the award outright. It also opens the door for other players in the final, like Jude Bellingham or Fabian Ruiz, to potentially share the honor if they find the net. Both Ruiz and Bellingham have found the net twice in the tournament thus far.
