Julen Lopetgui set to reunite with Karim Benzema at Al Ittihad? Know details

Al Ittihad's bid to reclaim the top spot in the league has suffered a setback, with the club 11 point adrift of the top spot

After sacking Nuno Espirito Santo a few days ago, Al Ittihad has reportedly lined up a replacement. The Portuguese manager was dismissed by after a poor run of results in all competitions. Allegations surfaced that Nuno had a falling out with French striker Karim Benzema, as well as a breakdown in confidence within the club.

Just a few days after the incident, it appears that Al Ittihad have finally found their successor. Reports are circulating that the Spanish manager Julen Lopetegui will team up with Saudi Arabian giants Al Ittihad.

Al Ittihad’s bid to reclaim the top spot in the league has suffered a setback, with the club sitting in fifth place. Lopegui will have a tall task at hand after signing with Al Ittihad. He will need to reduce an 11-point deficit to move into the top spot.

Lopetegui has been finalised by Al Ittihad for the rest of the campaign including the Club World Cup, according to a report from Goal. The club has yet to confirm the news. The parties are still negotiating the terms of the deal, which is expected to be finalised in the coming days.

Lopetegui was dismissed by Real Madrid during his first season with the club. The Spaniard enjoyed a good rapport with the club’s players, particularly Karim Benzema, during his brief time in charge. The manager was fond of Benzema’s goal-scoring record and his importance to the squad.

There is no doubt that Lopetgui would relish a reunion with the French veteran after his possible departure to the Middle East.

Al Ittihad will benefit from the Spaniard’s experience with the top European clubs as they look to get back on track.
