Jose Murinho sent off as Manchester United play draw again in Europa League

The pressure is mounting on Ten Hag, with the team having won just four of their first 12 matches this season.

Manchester United’s winless run in the Europa League continued on Thursday as they played out a 1-1 draw against Fenerbahce. The match, filled with drama, saw United take an early lead, only to lose control of the game in the second half. Adding to the chaos was Jose Mourinho, Fenerbahce’s manager, who was sent to the stands after a heated protest against the referee’s decision.

Early dominance but missed opportunities

The match started positively for Manchester United, with Christian Eriksen finding the back of the net in the 15th minute. His goal came from a well-worked team move, giving United the upper hand and a much-needed boost after a tough start to the season. Eriksen’s strike offered hope that the Red Devils might finally break their winless European streak.

However, despite this promising start, United were unable to capitalise further on their advantage. Andre Onana, United’s goalkeeper, pulled off an incredible double-save to keep Fenerbahce at bay, but the team struggled to create clear-cut chances after that initial goal.

Fenerbahce fightback and Jose Mourinho meltdown

Fenerbahce found their equaliser early in the second half through Youssef En Nesyri, levelling the score at 1-1. The Turkish side’s resilience and attacking intent were rewarded as United failed to maintain their grip on the match.

The game’s turning point came when Fenerbahce appealed for a penalty, which the referee denied. This decision triggered a furious reaction from Jose Mourinho, who was subsequently sent off for his animated protests. Mourinho, known for his fiery temper, watched the remainder of the match from the stands as his team pushed for a winner.

Manchester United European woes continue

For Erik ten Hag and Manchester United, the draw extends their winless run in European competition to three games. The team has been plagued by injuries and suspensions, missing 10 key players in this fixture. Despite the setbacks, Ten Hag had expressed confidence before the game, stating that the players available were “capable of getting the job done.” Yet, United struggled to convert their early dominance into a victory.

Currently sitting 21st in the 36-team Europa League table, Manchester United’s chances of advancing directly to the last 16 are slipping away. With five more group matches remaining against PAOK, Bodo Glimt, Viktoria Plzen, Rangers, and FCSB, there is still time for United to turn things around. But the pressure is mounting on Ten Hag, with the team having won just four of their first 12 matches this season.

Late Efforts Denied

Manchester United did have a few late chances to snatch a victory, but Fenerbahce’s goalkeeper, Dominik Livakovic, stood firm, making crucial saves to deny the English side. The result leaves United frustrated as they continue to search for form in both domestic and European competitions.

As Mourinho’s dismissal and United’s lacklustre performance dominate the headlines, it’s clear that both clubs have work to do if they want to achieve success this season. For Manchester United, in particular, their Europa League journey now faces a crucial phase, with no room for further slip-ups.
