Jordi Alba decides to retire from international football at 34 years of age

Jordi Alba retires from international football after 93 appearances for Spain.

Current Spain team captain Jordi Alba is set to retire from international football. Inter Miami defender and former Barcelona legend appeared in 93 games for Spain. He scored 10 times and provided 22 assists at that time. Alba was recently announced as the Spain captain. He led Spain to win their first UEFA Nations League this year. The 34-year-old left Barcelona this summer after spending 11 years at the club. He is currently enjoying life at Inter Miami along with Lionel Messi and Spain teammate Sergio Busquets.

Former Barcelona and Spain star Jordi Alba has decided to call it quits on his time with the national team. Alba has appeared in a total of 93 games for Spain and recently even became their captain. As their captain, Alba led Spain to their very first and only UEFA Nations League trophy win. This wasn’t Alba’s first international trophy. He also appeared in the 2012 Euros which Spain won. The team consisted of some of Spain’s legends Andreas Iniesta, Xavi, Sergio Busquets, Iker Casillas, and more.

Along with 2012, Alba also took part in the 2016 and 2020 Euros. He also played for Spain in the 2014, 2018, and 2022 World Cups. The decision comes in the middle of the turmoil that the Spanish FA is going through. However, Alba’s retirement does not seem to be related to the incident. As per reports, the 34-year-old defender already told Luis de la Fuente, the current Spanish coach about his decision at least ‘several weeks ago’. The details of his decision are still unknown.

Insidesport

The decision comes after Alba joined and started playing for the MLS club Inter Miami. He is playing alongside his Spain teammate Sergio Busquets and former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi. Since his debut with the club, Alba has become a regular starter. He has been playing with the gap of 3-4 days on a regular basis. Alba along with Messi and Busquets has already helped Miami win their first-ever trophy. He has helped Miami’s chances of winning as well as helped other players improve their performance. His retirement from the national team means that he will have less fatigue and more time with Miami.
