Jenni Hermoso claims she got threats during the Luis Rubiales fiasco. It occurred after the then-President of the Spanish Football Federation kissed her on the lips following their World Cup victory. Hermoso claimed the kiss was not consensual, and FIFA banned Rubiales for three years.
“I have had to suffer the consequences of an act that I did not provoke. That I did not choose and that was not premeditated. I have received threats and this is something that you never get used to.” said Jenni Hermoso.
However, the media frenzy lasted for several weeks. Hermoso was thrust into the spotlight without her will. She should have been enjoying the pinnacle of a career that has included seven league crowns and one Champions League triumph.
“These past weeks have been very difficult but thanks to my psychologist, I feel strong and I am not defeated and I don’t have thoughts about quitting football. I am not disenchanted.” she added.
Hermoso, 33, provided filmed evidence to a Spanish state prosecutor in September, only to have it leaked to the public. Hermoso was not included to Spain’s team in September. Montse Tome, the new coach, stated that she wants to safeguard the 33-year-old. She returned last month, however, and scored a late winner in a 1-0 win against Italy in the Women’s Nations League.
In September 2022, Spain’s women advocated for change within the Spanish Football Federation. Minutes after the final in Sydney, calls for better women’s conditions resurfaced. It was mostly due to Rubiales’ improper attitude.
In September, players in Spain’s professional top league of women’s football called off a strike. It came after an agreement on the season’s minimum pay of €21,000 was reached.
