Daizen Maeda scored just before halftime from a well-worked short corner to give Japan a 1-0 halftime lead. Japan won a short corner, and Doan crossed inside the penalty area. Yoshida won the initial header, and Maeda was the first to respond to the knockdown, shooting it into the Croatia net.

Coming from the second half, Ivan Perisic put Croatia on the level. From about 16 yards out, Perisic headed the ball into the back of the Japanese net. The seasoned attacker scored his sixth World Cup goal with a superb header. Lovren’s cross into the area found Perisic, who powerfully headed the ball into the bottom right corner.After an enthralling 90 minutes, Japan’s Kaoru Mitoma came closest in the gritty half-hour of extra time, forcing Kivakovic to block his powerful shot.
