January Transfer Window: Every Premier League club’s greatest January signing

Manchester City – Edin Dzeko

Manchester City tend not to make January signings but with the Bosnian, it was an exception they made in the winter of 2011. The £27million City paid for the striker was the Bundesliga’s record for a departure, and he went on to help City lift the FA Cup in his first season before following it up with the Premier League in 2011-12 and 2013-14.

Chelsea – Branislav Ivanovic

For around £9million in January 2008, Chelsea secured themselves a player that would go down as one of the best right-backs in Premier League history and also in Chelsea’s history.

Ivanovic went on to win it all during his nine years in West London and would frequently deputize as a club captain when John Terry or Frank Lampard were not available. January 2008 to February 2017 saw Ivanovic rack up 393 appearances for the club scoring 34 goals.

Liverpool – Virgil van Dijk

Van Dijk’s first two and a half seasons at Liverpool after joining the club in January 2018 may never be topped by anyone. His defensive stability fired the team to two Champions League finals, winning it in 2019, and then the Premier League title in 2019-20.

Much has been made recently about his struggle to recapture the form that made him runner up in the Ballon d’Or in 2019, but it is easy to forget just how dominant he was after signing for the Merseyside club.

Arsenal – Nacho Monreal

It is Nacho Monreal for Arsenal who has been a great servant for Arsenal as he arrived on the deadline of January 2013 at £8.5million. The Span international made over 250 appearances and won three FA Cups in his time with the Gunners.

There were also other choices like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Theo Walcott and Emmanuel Adebayor who scored hundreds of goals for Arsenal but all had their downfall at the club.

Manchester United – Nemanja Vidic

One of the greatest centre-backs to grace the Premier League, there are few words, to sum up just how good he was. His tackles were clean and his leadership was a massive boost in the dressing room and the Serb always stood up for his team.

He won 5 Premier League titles with Manchester United, 3 League Cups, 1 UEFA Champions League and a Club World Cup since he signed for United 16 years ago.

Tottenham – Michael Dawson

Dawson signed for Tottenham for £8million in January 2005 and went on to spend almost a decade at White Hart Lane. He helped the side win the 2008 League Cup and was a staple of the side as they transitioned from mid-table fodder into genuine contenders for the European places, becoming club captain in 2012.

West Ham – Jesse Lingard

It is a recent transfer but a transfer of utmost value which helped West Ham United cruise into the Europa League places with the lightning performances of Jesse Lingard. His 13 goal contributions in 16 matches were extraordinary. It could be seen if Lingard could once again leave Old Trafford for the likes of Newcastle United or West Ham United.
