10-man Colombia stun Uruguay, set Argentina clash in Copa America final

Colombia will be aiming to win their second Copa America title, having previously triumphed in 2001. This will be their third time reaching the final (1975, 2001).

Colombia has booked their place in the Copa America 2024 final after a dramatic 1-0 victory over Uruguay in a tense semifinal clash at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

Jefferson Lerma goal – The Difference

Colombia took the lead in the 39th minute through a well-worked corner. James Rodríguez, in a moment of brilliance, delivered a pinpoint cross that found Jefferson Lerma’s head.

The midfielder’s powerful header gave Uruguay’s goalkeeper no chance, sending the Colombian fans in the 70,644 strong crowd into a frenzy.

Red Card drama: Colombia vs Uruguay

Just before halftime, the momentum shifted when Colombian defender Daniel Munoz was shown a second yellow card, reducing his team to 10 men. This setback could have easily derailed Colombia’s dream run, but they showed remarkable resilience.

Defensive heroics by Colombia

Colombia’s defense stood firm throughout the second half, repelling numerous Uruguayan attacks. Despite going down a man, they remained disciplined and frustrated Uruguay’s attempts to find an equalizer.

The Colombians also had their chances to extend their lead. Midfielder Mateus Uribe saw two golden opportunities go begging in the latter stages of the match, much to the disappointment of the Colombian faithful.

Uruguay struggles continue

Uruguay, on the other hand, continued their struggles in front of goal. Their star striker Darwin Nunez failed to convert any of his four shots in the first half, while Jose Gimenez also spurned two chances in the second. Uruguay, who haven’t scored in their last two games, couldn’t break Colombia’s resolute defense.

Historic Final Awaits: Argentina vs Colombia

With the final whistle, Colombia erupted in celebration. This victory extends their unbeaten streak to a staggering 28 games. They now face a gargantuan challenge in the final – Lionel Messi’s Argentina, the reigning Copa America and World Cup champions. The final will be played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Sunday.

Colombia will be aiming to win their second Copa America title, having previously triumphed in 2001. This will be their third time reaching the final (1975, 2001). Argentina, tied with Uruguay for most Copa America titles (15), will be looking to defend their crown. The stage is set for an epic Copa America final.
