Foxes midfielder James Maddison joins Tottenham Hotspur on £40 million deal

Foxes midfielder James Maddison joins Tottenham Hotspur on £40 million deal

Tottenham Hotspur have secured the signature of James Maddison from Leicester City on a £40 million long-term deal.

James Maddison Transfer: Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur have come to a £40 million deal agreement over James Maddison. Maddison still has a year left on his contract with the Foxes. However, the 26-year-old remained a top target for both Spurs and Newcastle United this transfer window. Leicester City were expecting to rope in at least £60 million for the player. However, following their relegation to The Championship, they had to settle for £40 million. The deal is closed as the player has passed his medical tests on Wednesday.

James Maddison has been on Spurs’ radar for a long time. They missed the chance in 2016 when Maddison moved to Norwich City. They missed it again in 2018 when he moved to Leicester City. Even though the Foxes were relegated last season, Maddison still had a pretty good season. He scored 10 times for the Foxes and assisted 9 times in only Premier League. This was not the only season he gave amazing performances. He has made a name for himself as Premier League’s top attacking midfielders over the last few seasons.

Leicester City’s performance as a team gradually declined and they did not take it seriously. Eventually, the 2015-16 Premier League winners were relegated last season. Even though they can still make a comeback within the turn of next season, it will be hard for them to keep a hold of their star players including James Maddison. He was considered a top target for both Spurs and Newcastle United at the beginning of this transfer window and has now left the Foxes.

Leicester City were expecting to get at least £60 million from Madison’s sale. However, due to their relegation, they had to compromise on the amount and settle for £40 million which the Spurs offered. Newcastle were also in the race to sign him as they have an eventful season ahead of them. However, they went full throttle to bring in AC Milan’s Sandro Tonali. They paid over £60 million for the Italian midfielder. As a result, Newcastle pulled away from the race to sign Maddison.

Spurs gained momentum and reportedly, they managed to agree terms with both Leicester City and Maddison. The English player was only waiting to pass his medical tests which was held on Wednesday. As he has passed the tests, Spurs will soon be announcing the transfer. Tottenham have also completed the signing of Guglielmo Vicario, the Italian goalkeeper from Empoli. They ended last season in the 8th position in the Premier League table. Hence, they will not be playing in any European competition next season.

Spurs new coach Ange Postecoglou is coming with the intention of changing several things at the club. The addition of Maddison to the team will be a boost for him. In addition to the factor that they are close to losing their ace Harry Kane. They have received a £60 million offer from Bayern Munich for Kane. However, Spurs are not ready to sell the player in lower than £100 million. However, that offer could come through and Kane could be leaving. Hence, Maddison will be an important player for them.
