India’s premier football league, ISL 2024-25 (Indian Super League) is now in its final stages. The top six teams from the league table will be vying for the trophy. According to the new format introduced in 2022-23, the teams finishing in the top two spots will earn a direct berth in the semifinals, while the other four top-performing teams will play single-leg matches to secure their place in the semifinals.
Which teams have qualified for the ISL playoffs?
So far, four teams have qualified for the playoffs and confirmed their place so far. Meanwhile, five teams are out of the contention to qualify and four teams are eyeing for the other two spots remaining. League Shield champion Mohun Bagan Super Giant, FC Goa, Bengaluru FC and Jamshedpur FC have confirmed their place so far.
Teams in contention for other two playoff spots
Mumbai City FC, NorthEast United, Odisha FC, and East Bengal are the teams fighting for the other two playoff spots. Some of these teams have one remaining match, meanwhile some have two contests to play.
ISL 2024-25 playoff qualification scenario
Let’s look at the playoff qualification scenario for the four teams still in contention.
- NorthEast United FC: NorthEast United FC have the control on their own playoff future. By winning their remaining matches, they ensure their spot in the playoffs. They need three points to qualify without relying on other teams. Even with fewer points, they might qualify if other results favor them. Their upcoming games are against Chennaiyin FC on March 3 and East Bengal on March 8.
- Mumbai City FC: Mumbai City FC is close to securing a top-six finish, needing just one point from their last two games. Even with fewer points, they could still qualify based on other results. They play Kerala Blasters on March 7 and Bengaluru FC on March 11.
- Odisha FC: Odisha FC’s playoff hopes are slim after a goalless draw with Mohammedan SC. They must rely on other results, hoping both Mumbai City FC and NorthEast United FC drop points. Their next match is against Jamshedpur FC on March 5.
- East Bengal: East Bengal needs to win both of their remaining matches to have a playoff chance and depend on outcomes from other games. To qualify, either NorthEast United FC must lose points in their other match, or Mumbai City FC must not gain any more points. They play Bengaluru FC on March 2 and NorthEast United FC on March 8.
Teams that are out of contention
Kerala Blasters, Chennaiyin FC, Punjab FC, Hyderabad FC, and Mohammedan SC are the teams which are out of the contention to qualify for the playoff stage.
