ISL 2023: ISL VAR Controversy – The 2023 campaign of the Indian Super League had a lot of controversies and the last league match between Kerala and Hyderabad was no exception. Borja Herrera scored a goal for the Nizams in the first half, leading them to victory against the Yellow Army. But it was another refereeing blunder that stole the show. Referee disallowed a goal after checking TV replays on stadium screen. With No VAR (video assistant referee) in ISL, it was a unique move from the referee R Venkatesh. Hyderabad coach Manolo Marquez also blasted the referee after the incident. Follow ISL 2023 LIVE Updates on InsideSport.IN.

ISL VAR Controversy

In the 35th minute, the Nizams’ Joel Chianese had a goal disallowed for offside after the line referee consulted the stadium’s large screen. Manolo Marquez, the Hyderabad FC coach, was particularly unhappy about the decisions and addressed it later in the press conference.

It’s incredible. It was very funny. It was the first time in my life that I saw the linesman run to the halfway line and look at the (big) screen and call the referee and say it was offside. It was like this, it’s true (that this is what happened),” said Manolo.

Nevertheless, Borja Herrera’s goal was the only goal of the match, fortunately for Hyderabad FC. They defeated Kerala Blasters in the last game of the league to finish at the 2nd spot in the ISL 2022-23 table.

More from the head coach:

Head coach Manolo Marquez had some sparky words to say about refereeing in the ISL, “You know that I practically never have problems with the referees. This is the most difficult job (in football) because nobody supports you when you’re a referee. But, this ‘VAR’ has to be with every team, not just with us.”

“I’m not saying that the referees’ decisions (are against Hyderabad FC) because, in some games, for sure, we are the team who (get the) help. It’s not about us. Maybe we have to speak with Trevor, the boss of the referees, about this situation.”

Hyderabad FC will now play in the semi-finals as they wait to find out who they will be up against. They have a little over a week to prepare for the knockout stage.
