Is Lionel Messi fit? Inter Miami coach gives latest update on Argentine’s injury

Is Lionel Messi ready to return to the MLS? Inter Miami's coach provides an update his return.

Lionel Messi participation on the pitch for Inter Miami has decreased dramatically over the last three weeks. Despite a demanding workload in his first several weeks at the club. Gerardo Martino, the manager of Inter Miami, issued an update on Lionel Messi’s injury situation after the Argentine missed his third consecutive Inter Miami game.

Speaking to reporters, Martino said: “It is what I said. We’re going to see this game to game. We’re going to evaluate him [ahead of Wednesday’s match] against Chicago. If he’s going to be on the bench if he’s going to be out of the bench, whether against Chicago or Cincinnati [next weekend]. We’re going to see that.”

Messi was once again absent from the Herons’ 1-1 tie with New York City FC in an MLS match. The renowned striker missed his third consecutive Inter Miami game due to injury.

As a result, there were worries that he might not play again this season. However, following the game, manager Gerardo Martino issued an update on the star’s injury, indicating that he is recuperating quickly.

“He’s training on the field apart from the group, but he’s feeling better and better … time will tell whether what I am saying is true or whether that person who made the report is right.” Martino added.

With Messi sidelined, his club has now gone winless in their previous three games. It includes a loss against Houston Dynamo in the US Open Cup final.

It remains to be seen if Messi will make his MLS debut against the Chicago Fire on Wednesday. Miami has five league games remaining in their quest for a postseason position. Messi will play an active role, according to Martino, but his minutes will be monitored game by game.
