The All India Football Federation (AIFF) hosts the Intercontinental Cup,  which is a four-nation football competition. It was introduced in 2018 to replace the Nehru Cup, and the inaugural competition was known as the 2018 Intercontinental Cup (India).

The AIFF organised the competition as part of the senior men’s team’s preparation for both the Asian Cup itself . The third round of 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualification games. The Hero Intercontinental Cup will see its third iteration; the first two, in 2018 and 2019, were hosted in Mumbai and Ahmedabad, respectively. The competition serves as a practise run for the Asian Cup 2024.

In the first competition, the hosts triumphed over the other competitors, Kenya, New Zealand, and Chinese Taipei. North Korea defeated India, Syria, and Tajikistan to win the second round. It was also the final one to be held before the Coivd-19 pandemic struck. The nations for the 2023 edition have not yet been determined, although the competition is scheduled to take place from June 9 to 18.

Prior to this match, Mongolia and Vanuatu have never been opponents for the Indian Men’s National Team. The hosts have a history of six games against Lebanon. The Blue Tigers have gone five games without losing at home; this record started on June 8, 2022, when they defeated Cambodia 2-0 in Kolkata’s Round 3 of the AFC Asian Cup 2023 Qualifiers. Igor Stimac’s team has since defeated Afghanistan (2-1), Hong Kong (4-0), and the Hero Tri-Nation, where they overcame Myanmar (1-0) and the Kyrgyz Republic (2-0) in Imphal.

The SAFF Championship comes immediately after the Intercontinental Cup. The 14th SAFF Men’s Championship will take place from June 21 to July 3, 2023, in Bangalore, India. India, who has won eight times, would like to add another trophy to their collection. The South Asian Football Federation expects all of its member countries to take part in this edition. The teams will be split into two groups and play in a round-robin format, with the top two teams from each group moving on to the semifinals.
