Manchester City may have won the treble last season and are sitting at the top of Premier League, but Pep Guardiola’s team are having a hard time tackling with injury issues currently. Their prolific striker Erling Haaland was sidelined after suffering an ankle injury that kept him out of Norway’s Euro Qualifiers against Scotland. To add on top of that, midfielder Mateo Kovacic suffered another recurring quad injury. With the Citizens set to take on Liverpool next week in the Premier League, this could prove to be a major setback for them. Let’s take a look at City’s injury woes.

Erling Haaland

There are doubts as to whether Haaland will be available for Man City’s next Premier League game against Liverpool on 25 November. The Norwegian striker has scored 17 times in 18 appearances for the Citizens in all competitions this season. He has also scored 13 times in the PL, with four assists.

Rodri

The 27-year-old reported a ‘discomfort’ to Spain’s medical staff this week, who subsequently left the star out of the squad to face Cyprus on Thursday. Rodri’s presence has been key for City this season, who lost all three games in September and October when he was suspended.

Mateo Kovacic

Kovacic has sustained another recurring quad injury that is expected to keep him out for two to three weeks, according to The Athletic. The Croatia international has withdrawn from Euro Qualifiers with Latvia and Armenia. The Croatian player came on as a substitute in City’s 4-4 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League. In September 2022, he suffered a similar injury that sidelined him for three weeks.

Nathan Ake

Ake has pulled out of the Netherlands squad for Euro Qualifiers in 2024. The Dutch defender also missed City’s recent Premier League game against Chelsea. Both Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman and Man City manager Pep Guardiola have declined to comment on Ake’s injury. So there’s no guarantee when Ake will return. Since signing for City in 2020, the defender has struggled with injury, missing 38 games for both club and country.

Matheus Nunes

Nunes was deemed not ‘fit enough’ to feature for Portugal in the recent international break. “The midfielder is unfit for Portugal’s two games. Matheus Nunes was declared clinically unfit for games against Liechtenstein and Iceland after undergoing tests,” a statement from Portugal FA read. It is unclear whether the midfielder will be available against Liverpool.

Kevin De Bruyne

De Bruyne has been a long term absentee this season. De Bruyne has been out of action since injuring his hamstring at the beginning of the Premier League season. The Belgian is making good progress in his recovery, but Guardiola is not keen to rush him back into action. De Bruyne has yet to train or run with the team, but it has been reported that he will be back in January or February.
