Brazil on Saturday ruled forward Vinicius Jr out of Tuesday’s World Cup qualifying match against Argentina due to a left thigh injury. Vinicius, 23, limped off the match against Colombia and underwent imaging tests that showed an injury to the posterior left thigh muscle, the Brazilian Football Confederation said Friday.

The CBF added that Vinicius, who is a key part of Brazil’s attack, will be out of action for the match against 2022 World Cup winners Argentina in Rio de Janeiro next week. Vinicius has already left the Brazil camp. He will undergo further tests at Real Madrid.

Vinicius had previously said that it would be a tall task for him to play against Argentina. “Based on what the doctors have told me, it will be a bit difficult,” he said after Brazil went down 2-1 in Barranquilla on Thursday.

Vinicius left the field in the 27th minute of the World Cup qualifier against Colombia, with his side leading 1-0. He provided the assist for the Gabriel Martinelli goal that put the Selecao in the lead.

“I think it’s the same injury as before. I felt a pain at the back of my thigh,” he had added. Notably, the Brazilian star sustained an injury to his right thigh in a league game for Real Madrid in late August. He was sidelined for a month.

Vinícius, who scored twice in Madrid’s 5-1 thrashing of Valencia last Saturday, is enjoying one of his best performances this season. Real Madrid are second in the La Liga table after 13 games, just two points behind surprise leaders Girona. They are also unbeaten in Champions League group C, winning four games in a row.
