Indian Football Team head coach Igor Stimac set to hand 17 AFC Asian Cup Debut as Blue Tigers gear up for continental piece

Indian Football Team head coach Igor Stimac faces a significant challenge in finalizing his squad for the upcoming AFC Asian Cup as he grapples with a growing list of injuries. Although the eagerly anticipated announcement of the 26-member squad is scheduled for this Saturday, the increasing number of players on the casualty list adds complexity to Stimac’s decision-making process.

Placed in Group B alongside Australia, Uzbekistan, and Syria, India is gearing up to kick off their AFC Asian Cup 2023 campaign. The journey begins with a match against the Socceroos on January 13, followed by a clash with Uzbekistan on the 18th and concluding the group stage against Syria on the 23rd.

Igor Stimac has unveiled a 26-player squad for the tournament. Despite being plagued by injuries, there is a positive aspect with 17 new faces set to make their AFC Asian Cup debut in this campaign.

Akash Mishra has been a consistent presence in the Indian team since his debut in 2021, amassing 24 caps and eyeing his debut at the upcoming AFC Asian Cup. Lalchungnunga, having played just one match with a brief appearance against Qatar, hopes for more opportunities. Mehtab Singh, with nine international matches under his belt, aims to contribute strategically, having spent time on the bench during the World Cup qualifiers.

Nikhil Poojary’s consistent performance for Hyderabad FC in the ISL bodes well for India’s defensive strength. Rahul Bheke, set to collaborate with Sandesh Jhingan, brings both defensive prowess and mentorship for younger players. Brandon Fernandes, returning after a sideline period, is eager to make a significant impact when given the chance.

The unexpected inclusion of Deepak Tangri, yet to debut for the national team, raises curiosity about his role under the coach’s strategy. Lalengmawia Ralte, primed for the central or defensive midfield, is expected to make a notable impact with his exceptional recent performances.

Liston Colaco, despite recent bench roles, may see consideration due to his impressive ISL form. Naorem Mahesh Singh’s consistency as a left winger adds a dynamic dimension to the team’s midfield. Sahal Abdul Samad’s potential return by the third week of January could significantly boost the team, bringing in his impressive form and goal-scoring ability.
