With Igor Stimac’s squad containing an array of, young, agile, and talented players, we at InsideSport.IN chose the five players to look out for during India’s encounter against Singapore.

Akash Mishra (Defender)

The Germany-trained left-back has been the recent inclusion on Igor Stimac’s list of favourites following his stout performance. Mishra was a mainstay in Manuel Marquez’s Hyderabad FC throughout the last season in the Indian Super League and has been quite pivotal in the left flank for the outfit.

The 20-year-old has produced some key performances for the Blue Tigers in recent times as well across the different ranks of the National team. Although discontinued now, Mishra is a prime example of an Indian Arrows project graduate. With the continuous show of his agility and pace along with his impressive defensive qualities, Mishra is set to be an asset for the Indian Football Team for a long time having replaced some veterans.

Lallianzuala Chhangte ( Midfielder)

Lallianzuala Chhangte is one of the players to earn a recent call-up to the National team following their impressive performance in the Durand Cup 2022. Scoring 7 goals in 7 appearances along with making three assists, in the tournament for Mumbai City FC, Chhangte won the Golden Boot.

Chhangte’s speed would add a lot of speed to the attack. He is a versatile player with excellent positioning and dribbling skills who knows exactly how to finish a goal. His abilities and vision on the field are poised to make him one of India’s most important players in the tournament. Along with that, Chhangte’s current form will help the side’s scoring chances.

Anwar Ali ( Defender)

Anwar Ali’s selection in the senior team was an anticipated affair. Although earning his maiden call up in 2019, it was cut short following the defender’s rare heart condition. However, Ali was called up to the national squad by coach Igor Stimac in March 2022, ahead of India’s two friendly matches against Bahrain and Belarus.

He made his debut on March 23 against Bahrain, losing 2-1, and scored his first international goal on June 14 against Hong Kong, winning 4-0 in the 2023 AFC Asian Cup qualification.Being one of the rarest ball playing centre-back Ali happens to be a perfect partner to that of experienced Sandesh Jhingan. The FC Goa defender provides an at-par performance to that of his veteran contemporary in tackles and interceptions.

Ashique Kuruniyan (Midfielder)

During the 2023 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers, head coach Igor Stimac made a statement on how Ashique Kuruniyan will always feature in his team given his work rate and agility. Despite the recent stale performances by ATK Mohun Bagan in the Durand Cup 2022 and inter zonal semifinals of the AFC Cup, Ashique stirred some sparks with his performances. Ashique had put up some admirable performances in the Blue Tigers jersey recently as well.

His continuous efforts kept the left flank lively while putting the defenders on their toes. Kuruniyan was the one to set up Sahal Abdul Samad for the wonderous 91 minute strike against Afghanistan which led India to maintain an all-win record in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers.

Later he set Ali for the 1st-minute goal against HongKong too. Kuruniyan, a winger who can also play as a wing-back, is highly regarded by teammates and coaches for his speed and determination on the field. He is also recognised for his versatility and is regarded as one of India’s future football stars.

Sunil Chhetri (Forward)

The talismanic captain of the Indian Football Team will always be a player to watch out for the Blue Tigers. Chhetri seems to age like fine wine as he keeps on delivering match saving performances. Sunil was unable to participate in international friendlies against Bahrain and Belarus in March 2022 due to injuries sustained during the 2021-22 Indian Super League season.

Then he played against Jordan in an international friendly match as part of the preparations for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers, which were to be held in June 2022.
