I-League Foreigner Rule: I-League Foreigners: After banning international players from playing in lesser levels, AIFF made yet another action to support the advancement of locally produced athletes. The Hero I-League teams should be permitted to pitch a maximum of three international players in their starting XI and register up to five foreigners in their squad, according to the AIFF League Committee’s recommendation. The Committee, and the behest of a number of Hero I-League clubs, deliberated long on the criteria for the number of foreign players allowed in the league, and came up with the suggestion that the foreigners quota be reduced in order to allow more Indian players to get opportunities in the Hero I-League.

It was recommended that the clubs be allowed to register up to five foreigners in their squad and field maximum three foreign players in their playing XI. It will no more be mandatory, suggested the Committee, for clubs to sign specifically an Asian quota player.

The members of the Committee also put up the suggestion to maintain status quo in U-22 Regulation in the 2023-24 season of the Hero I-League, which states that every Participating Club needs to ensure five of the total registered players in the squad need to be under the age of 22 (born on or after 1-1-2002).

The All India Football Federation Executive Committee will no longer allow foreigners (both men and women) to compete in any category of municipal, district, or state leagues in India beginning with the following season. Previously, the federation barred international players from competing in the I-League 2nd Division. The same was confirmed in a statement sent by AIFF Ex Co. to its member groups.

The national coach, Igor Stimac, has proposed reducing the amount of foreign players participating in the ISL and I-League to give himself a broader player pool. Hmar, who is credited with sparking the Mizoram football revolution, had remarked that there aren’t enough opportunities for Indians and suggested starting at a lesser level. The panel has recommended to the AIFF executive committee that all state competitions be played without foreign players in order to encourage more indigenous players to participate.
