The FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier match between India and Kuwait will take place in Hyderabad, following the successful bid by the Telangana Football Association (TFA). Scheduled for June 6 this year, the event marks a significant milestone for Hyderabad as it prepares to host international football teams on the journey to the FIFA World Cup.
Dr. K.T. Mahi, Chairman of TFA, announced the approval, highlighting the collaborative efforts of TFA officials, including Mr. G.P. Palguna, TFA secretary, and Telangana’s Chief Minister. Dr. Mahi credited the Chief Minister’s positive response for enabling this historic event, while Mr. Palguna’s efforts also garnered support for financial assistance to state sports associations.
“The positive response from the Chief Minister has paved the way for this historic event. Mr. Palguna also requested to provide financial assistance to all the State Sports Associations. And, we have received a very encouraging response,” Dr. Mahi said.
“We express our deepest gratitude to everyone involved in making this momentous event a reality. The support and collaboration from all quarters have been instrumental in reaching this milestone,” Dr. Mahi said.
The upcoming World Cup qualifier holds great importance for India, currently ranked third in the standings. Despite a recent loss to Qatar, India still has an opportunity to advance to the third round of the prestigious tournament by securing one of the top two spots in the qualifiers.
