Lionel Messi missed Argentina’s training session on Thursday, June 27, in Miami ahead of their final Copa America 2024 group stage match against Peru. This crucial game is set to take place on Saturday, June 29, at Hard Rock Stadium in Florida. Adding to Argentina’s challenges, manager Lionel Scaloni has been handed a one-match suspension by CONEMBOL due to delays in restarting games.
Lionel Messi to miss Argentina vs Peru
Argentina has already secured a spot in the quarterfinals following their 1-0 victory over Chile on June 25. However, multiple reports from Argentina, suggest that Messi will sit out the match against Peru to prepare for the upcoming quarterfinal clash. Even a draw against Peru will ensure Argentina tops their group, potentially setting up a match against Ecuador or Mexico in Houston on July 4.
While the rest of the Argentina squad trained at Florida International University on Thursday, Messi remained at the team hotel. The captain reportedly received treatment on his right adductor. In the post-match conference following Argentina’s win against Chile, Messi mentioned that he felt some discomfort in his right leg early in the game.
Why will Messi miss the Copa America 2024 game?
Reports from multiple Argentine outlets indicate that Messi underwent a scan of his right adductor at MetLife Stadium after the win against Chile. He is scheduled for another scan on Friday. Additionally, Messi informed reporters on Tuesday that he had been dealing with a sore throat and fever recently.
No Lionel Scaloni on the sidelines
Additionally, Scaloni has also been fined and will miss the game against Peru. According to TyC Sport, Pablo Aimar will step in to lead La Albiceleste during Scaloni’s absence.
Despite Messi and Scaloni’s absence, Argentina is expected to overcome Peru. With attacking talents like Julian Alvarez, Lautaro Martinez, and Angel Di Maria available, La Albiceleste should still pose a significant threat to Peru.
