Historic! Manchester United planning to tour India, to follow Bayern Munich & Argentina’s suit

A sweet, sweet news might be incoming for Manchester United fans here in India. The club's main sponsors are planning to bring the Red Devils in the country!

The prospect of Manchester United, one of the world’s most iconic football clubs, gracing the Indian pitch is no longer a distant dream. Don McGuire, chief marketing officer of Qualcomm (Manchester United’s shirt sponsor), recently hinted at this possibility, suggesting a massive development for Indian football.

If it happens, this tour would bring world-class football directly to Indian soil. Countless fans would get to see top players, including Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo, Lisandro Martinez, inspiring young athletes and raising interest in the sport nationwide. For the millions of Manchester United supporters in India, it would be a dream come true to see their favorite team play in person.

‘Love to play in India..’

What we will do is work with the club on their summer tours. We will be a presenting sponsor on the tours, wherever it is. But we’d like them to take it around the world and share the love. And so we’re looking at markets that are big Snapdragon markets as well, to bring the team,” Don McGuiren was quoted by The Athletic.

Playing in China is a little bit different because there are a lot more layers of regulation you have to get through. But we’d love for them to play in China and India,”

Massive news for Indian football

The tour could also boost local football infrastructure, as hosting a club of United’s stature requires high-quality facilities. This might lead to improvements in stadiums and training grounds across India. Economically, such an event could attract fans from all over India and neighboring countries, which could then benefit massively. It would also put Indian football in the global spotlight, potentially attracting more international attention to the country’s growing football scene.

India’s burgeoning love affair with football is undeniable. The country’s passionate fan base, coupled with the increasing popularity of the Premier League, has made it a lucrative market for global football clubs While India has hosted other major clubs like Bayern Munich and seen stars like Lionel Messi, Thomas Muller and Phillip Lahm play exhibition matches, a United tour would likely be even bigger given the club’s massive following in the country. It has the potential to be a watershed moment for Indian football, leaving a legacy for generations to come.
