Gokulam Kerala FC set to participate in AFC Women’s Club Championship 2023

After losing out on the AFC Women's Club Championship last year, Gokulam Kerala FC has been recommended by AIFF to compete in 2023.

Gokulam Kerala FC has been confirmed by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to compete in the AFC Women’s Club Championship 2023. The tournament is scheduled to take place from November 6th to November 12th, 2023. However, further details about the event have not yet been announced.

This announcement follows Gokulam’s communication with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) expressing their interest in participating in the prestigious tournament. It is a tournament where the top women’s clubs in Asia compete for continental glory.

Gokulam requested the AIFF to recommend their inclusion in the sole Asian-level women’s club competition. In response, the AIFF forwarded Gokulam’s request to the AFC, who subsequently confirmed the participation of the reigning champions of India in the upcoming Championship.

Initially, Gokulam Kerala FC was not included in the tournament as the AFC had rearranged the competition zones. However, following the exchange of letters, the team will now have the opportunity to participate, which they were unable to do in the 2022 edition.

In the previous year, Gokulam Kerala FC was unable to compete due to FIFA’s ban on the All India Football Federation (AIFF) at that time. On the day the ban was imposed, the team had already arrived in Uzbekistan but was left stranded in the country and denied participation by either the AFC or the tournament organizers.

Gokulam Kerala FC wrote a letter to the AIFF, outlining their exceptional achievements domestically and emphasizing the circumstances surrounding their inability to participate in the previous season.

Earlier this year, Gokulam Kerala FC secured their third consecutive victory in the Indian Women’s League (IWL) by defeating Kickstart FC 5-0 in the final. Throughout the tournament, they remained undefeated in 10 matches and impressively scored a total of 64 goals.

Indumathi Kathiresan, a player from the Indian national team, was recognized as the Most Valuable Player, while Sabitra Bhandari, their Nepali striker, emerged as the top scorer.
