Getafe are set to begin negotiations with Manchester United over the permanent signing of Mason Greenwood. The English youngster appears to have settled well in Spain. Manchester United loaned out the striker to La Liga in September. It was after the Premier League team decided he couldn’t play for them following his coercion charges.
Mason Greenwood was loaned to the La Liga club in an attempt to revive his career away from the public eye. He has three goals and two assists in nine games while adjusting to life in Spain with his partner and young daughter.
The 22-year-old is still under contract with United until 2025. Getafe officials are hoping to lure Greenwood away from Old Trafford and intend to begin contract negotiations. However, Manchester United are yet to make any decision on his future.
“Getafe have discussed trying to get United round the table so they can make an offer. Which they believe could be attractive to United to get Mason off their wage bill.” a source told The Sun.
“The likelier option is United agree for the loan to be extended as they know that Mason is happy and rebuilding his life.
“They know he needs to grow up and want him to do so — and so far the Getafe loan has worked out well for everyone.”
A transfer away from Old Trafford would undoubtedly be beneficial to his growth and future. Greenwood appears to be attempting to construct a future away from the scrutiny that comes with being at United.
If the English forward continues to perform well in Spain, United may be able to command a high fee for him. An amount that coach Erik ten Hag could put back in the team. However, if Sir Jim Ratcliffe does buy a stake in United, he may be more willing to bring Greenwood back than the present owners are.
