Germany vs Scotland: Julian Nagelsmann’s men look to begin Euro 2024 with win

Having failed to reach the Euros from 2000-16, Scotland has qualified for back-to-back tournaments and the next aim is to reach the knockout stage for the first time

Hosts Germany will face Scotland in their Euro 2024 opener at the Allianz Arena in Munich. This is Germany’s first time hosting a major tournament since the 2006 World Cup, where they reached the semi-finals. Meanwhile, Steve Clarke’s Scotland aims for their first-ever knockout-round appearance. Germany vs Scotland will kick off at 12.30 AM in India and live streaming will be on Sony Liv.

Germany vs Scotland Preview

Following their poor performance in the 2022 World Cup under Hansi Flick, Germany is widely seen as the outright favourite to win Euro 2024. Victories over France and the Netherlands in March, and a recent 0-0 draw with Ukraine, indicate they have overcome last year’s setbacks against Turkey and Austria.

Meanwhile, Scotland lost only once in their qualifying campaign, finishing second in the UEFA Euro qualification standings. They have exceeded expectations over the past year, though recent defeats to Northern Ireland and the Netherlands have dented their form. A 2-0 win over Gibraltar provided a confidence boost, but a 2-2 draw against Finland this week shows they need to elevate their game for this crucial fixture.

Germany Team News

Ahead of the game, Julian Nagelsmann faces a few selection challenges. Leon Goretzka, Serge Gnabry, and Timo Werner missed out on selection for various reasons. Additionally, 20-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic withdrew due to tonsillitis. Borussia Dortmund’s Emre Can was nominated as his replacement, but Nagelsmann is expected to rely on Bayer Leverkusen’s Robert Andrich and the retiring Toni Kroos in a double pivot.

In midfield, Ilkay Gundogan will likely captain the side from the number 10 position. Nagelsmann has a couple of dilemmas in attack, with Leroy Sane and Florian Wirtz competing for a spot out wide. While Niclas Fullkrug and Kai Havertz vie for the striker role.

Germany Predicted XI:

Neuer; Kimmich, Tah, Rudiger, Mittelstadt; Kroos, Andrich; Musiala, Gundogan, Wirtz; Havertz

Scotland, meanwhile, suffered significant injury setbacks earlier this month. Queens Park Rangers striker Lyndon Dykes withdrew from the squad due to an ankle injury sustained in training, depriving the team of their primary focal point. Liverpool winger Ben Doak also pulled out, having been dealing with a knee issue since December. Rangers’ John Souttar and veteran goalkeeper Craig Gordon were among those who had to drop out when Clarke trimmed his squad to 26.

Despite these challenges, key players like Andy Robertson, Scott McTominay, and Stuart Armstrong are expected to be fit and ready. Ryan Jack missed training on Tuesday but is not expected to miss the match.

Scotland Predicted XI:

Gunn; Hendry, Hanley, Tierney; Ralston, McTominay, Gilmour, Robertson; McGinn, Christie; Shankland
