German police have arrested a 21-year-old man who climbed onto the roof of Dortmund’s stadium during the UEFA Euro 2024 Round of 16 match between Germany and Denmark on Saturday. Authorities reported that they used a helicopter to illuminate the roof, to locate the man who had been spotted by spectators climbing the interior of the stadium.

During the first-half suspension due to a thunderstorm in Dortmund, a masked man was seen making his way onto the roof. He was chased and held at gunpoint by police before being detained. The authorities have confirmed his arrest but stated that there is no evidence suggesting he intended to endanger spectators at Signal Iduna Park.

“The police have now been able to arrest the man. At no point was there any danger to other people,” read a statement. “The police are still unable to provide any information about the man’s identity or his motive.”

Germany book Euro 2024 Quarterfinal berth

Meanwhile, Julian Nagelsmann’s side had to wait for their victory after the match was suspended due to severe weather conditions, including thunder and lightning. The game, which stood at 0-0, resumed after a 20-minute delay. Denmark nearly took the lead, but Joachim Andersen’s goal was disallowed for offside after a VAR review.

Shortly after VAR canceled Andersen’s effort, he became involved in a handball incident at the other end of the pitch. This led to a penalty for Germany, which Kai Havertz successfully converted. Later, in the 68th minute, Jamal Musiala doubled Germany’s lead, securing their spot in the quarter-finals with a 2-0 victory over Denmark. Germany now looks ahead to facing the winner of the Spain vs. Georgia match in the quarter-finals.
