Gareth Southgate’s England become part of unwanted record in Euro 2024

The only other time this occurred was in 2016 when Germany, Poland, Northern Ireland, and Ukraine also netted just seven goals

England have made history at UEFA Euro 2024, but not for the right reasons. The Three Lions won Group C in lacklustre fashion, drawing 0-0 with Slovenia on Tuesday night to secure their spot. Despite winning the group, England’s performance has been underwhelming, leaving fans disappointed.

The team’s struggles were evident as they failed to impress throughout the group stage. Gareth Southgate’s side managed to secure the top spot, but the coach has faced criticism for the team’s uninspiring displays. Both Southgate and captain Harry Kane have tried to highlight the positives, but supporters are not convinced. The lacklustre performances have resulted in an unwanted record for Group C.

What record was made by England in Euro 2024?

In total, just seven goals were scored in all the group matches, making Group C at Euro 2024 the joint-lowest scoring group in European Championship history. The only other time this occurred was in 2016 when Germany, Poland, Northern Ireland, and Ukraine also netted just seven goals. Alongside the goal drought, there was a notable absence of victories.

England was the only team in Group C to win a game, securing three points with a 1-0 victory over Serbia in their opening match. Denmark and Slovenia drew all their games, while Serbia drew two and lost one. The group saw two 0-0 draws, and not a single match featured more than two goals.

Lowest scoring groups in UEFA Euros

England’s scoring woes continue

With the talent England possesses, fans expected thrilling goal-fests, but the team fell short. Southgate’s squad has recorded a lower expected goals (xG) than any other team that qualified for the last 16. Additionally, England managed only 29 shots in the group stage, the second-lowest tally among the knockout stage teams, only ahead of Slovenia’s 26.
