Gareth Southgate’s replacement locked in, England name Lee Carsley as manager for Nations League

Gareth Southgate was let go as England's head coach after they finished as the runners-up in recent UEFA Euros 2024.

In what has come as a breaking news, Lee Carsley has been appointed as the interim manager of the England men’s national team, stepping up from his role leading the U21s. Carsley will take the reins for the upcoming September fixtures in the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League, with the potential to remain in the position throughout autumn as the FA searches for Gareth Southgate’s permanent successor.

Profile of Lee Carsley

The 50-year-old boasts a successful coaching pedigree. He guided the U21s to victory in the 2023 UEFA European Championship, marking England’s first triumph in the tournament since 1984. Carsley also brings extensive experience from his previous roles across England’s development teams and club sides like Coventry City, Sheffield United, and Manchester City.

Carsley’s familiarity with the England setup is a key advantage. He previously supported the national team’s technical staff at major tournaments, including Euro 2020, the 2022 World Cup, and most recently, Euro 2024. As a player, Carsley represented both club and country, making over 340 appearances in the top flight and earning 40 caps for the Republic of Ireland.

What did Lee Carsley has to say?

Commenting on his appointment, Carsley expressed his honor at leading the team and emphasized continuity as his priority. “My main goal is to ensure a smooth transition while the FA continues their search for a new permanent manager,” he stated. “Securing promotion in the Nations League is our objective.”

FA CEO Mark Bullingham commended Carsley’s credentials and said, “Lee’s a fantastic coach who knows most of the players from international or club settings. He’s the ideal interim solution, and we have full confidence in his performance during the Nations League matches.”

With Carsley stepping up, Ben Futcher will take temporary charge of the U21s for their upcoming qualifiers. Further details regarding the backroom staff for both squads will be announced soon.
