French UNFP call out PSG for ‘harassment’ following Kylian Mbappe preseason snub

The National Union of Professional Footballers (UNFP) of France has condemned Paris Saint-Germain for excluding Kylian Mbappe from their pre-season trip to Asia, as the forward's contract dispute with the club continues.

PSG has been accused of bullying star striker Kylian Mbappe after he was pulled from the squad after refusing to renew his contract. Following the treatment of France’s captain, the National Union of Professional Footballers (UNFP) has criticized Paris Saint-Germain.

“These players – all of them – must enjoy the same working conditions as the rest of the professional workforce,” the UNFP, the main trade union for professional football players in France, said in a lengthy statement on Saturday.

Mbappe has stated that he expects to leave PSG when his current contract expires in the summer of 2024. PSG wants Mbappe to sign a new deal or he will be sold this summer. They will not allow him to leave for free. As a result, he was subbed off their pre-season visit to Asia. In the midst of a developing scenario, the French players’ union (UNFP) has come out in support of Mbappe.

The union released a statement to “denounce” PSG’s handling of players like Mbappe following the club’s decision to bench the forward. The organisation stated that he is the club’s latest celebrity to undergo such abuse. Some of the players that have been blocked out in recent years include Leandro Paredes, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Keylor Navas.

The UNFP added: “All these players, must benefit from the same working conditions as the rest of the professional workforce. It nevertheless seems useful to the UNFP to remind managers that exerting pressure on an employee. For example, to force him to leave or to accept what the employer wants constitutes moral harassment. The French law strongly condemns.”

If the impasse persists, Mbappe may be sidelined and inactive for the whole 2023-24 season. PSG wants a transfer price for its star. Real Madrid, Mbappe’s likely next club, are unwilling to pay for his services. They are willing to wait a year to sign him for free.
