Swiatek defeated 18-year old Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-3 in the final to win her sixth consecutive title this year. Swiatek has been an unstoppable force in 2022 as she last faced a defeat at the Dubai Tennis Championships in February.

Swiatek rose to world number one in April 2022 after the retirement of top-ranked player Ash Barty and she has never looked back since then. She won the titles at Qatar Open, Indian Wells Masters, Miami Open, Stuttgart Open and now the French Open.

  • She has now won her 35th consecutive match to level with Venus Williams, who achieved 35 consecutive wins in 2000.
  • This is the most successive victories achieved by any women’s singles player in the 21st century.

Look back at Venus Williams’ 35-match unbeaten streak

  • Venus Williams won five WTA titles and the Syndey Olympics gold medal during her unbeaten run in the year 2000.
  • In that year she won two Grand Slam events, which were Wimbledon and US Open. The victory in the 2000 Wimbledon was her first-ever Grand Slam title.
  • Williams was ranked World No.3 during this period of her unbaten run.
  • Her win-streak finally came to an end in October that year after she suffered a three-set defeat to compatriot Lindsay Davenport at Linz Open final.

Swiatek is now just a victory away from breaking Williams’ 22-year old record. Also with her sixth title victory, she has equalled the record of consecutive tournaments won in the 2000s after Venus Williams in 2000 and Justine Henin in 2007-2008.

Iga Switek is however still a long way from matching the Top-10 unbeaten streak in the WTA tour. Martina Navratilova still holds the record of winning the most consecutive matches on the WTA circuit as she has won 74 successive games in 1984.

Player Consecutive wins Year
Martina Navratilova 74 1984
Steffi Graf 66 1989-90
Martina Navratilova 58 1986-87
Margaret Court 57 1972
Chris Evert 55 1974
Martina Navratilova 54 1983-84
Steffi Graf 46 1988
Steffi Graf 45 1987
Chris Evert 41 1975-76
Martina Navratilova 41 1982

If Swiatek’s feat is compared with the men’s tennis, only legends Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer has a much higher successive victories with Djokovic achieving a 43-match unbeaten streak in 2011, while Roger Federer in 2006 enjoyed a 42-match unbeaten streak.

Longest winning streaks in tennis since 2000:

Novak Djokovic – 43 (2011)
Roger Federer – 42 (2006)
Iga Swiatek – 35 (2022)*
Venus Williams – 35 (2000)
