Lampard’s team lost to the Hammers 2-0 at the London Stadium. Everton’s under-fire board decided to fire Lampard as a result of the outcome, which left the team mired in the Premier League relegation zone and two points from safety. Everton now has just 15 points from 20 league games this season, putting them two points outside of safety.

Following the loss, Everton owner Farhad Moshiri met with other board members in the city. He made a rare appearance at the West Ham game. Following such talks, a choice was taken regarding Lampard’s future. The departure of the manager won’t likely calm the Toffees’ fan base, either, as they have recently been criticising those in authority for what they see to be years of making bad decisions.

As he departed the London Stadium, Moshiri, in an astonishing move, disclaimed control over Lampard’s future, telling a Sky Sports News reporter, “It’s not my decision” about managers. Everton’s players were granted Monday off after the defeat by West Ham, and they won’t likely be back at Finch Farm until Tuesday.

Lampard has now had two fairly disastrous stints as the manager of Premier League teams after being fired by Chelsea in the middle of the season two years ago. Although he might eventually return to coaching in the division, it’s also feasible that he will first consider possibilities outside in order to repair his reputation.

Nuno Espirito Santo, who is presently in charge of Saudi Arabian team Al-Ittihad and was previously the manager of Wolves and Tottenham, is one candidate being considered to replace Lampard. Sean Dyche, who is unemployed after leaving Burnley at the end of the previous campaign, has also been mentioned as a potential candidate to lead Goodison Park.
