France FA clear stance on Didier Deschamps’ future following Euro Cup exit

Deschamps has managed the national team since 2012 and became only the third person to win the World Cup as both a player and manager in 2018

France FA have made a decision on the head coach’s future after Les Bleus were eliminated from Euro 2024 at the semi-final stage, increasing the pressure on manager Didier Deschamps. Despite Randal Kolo Muani giving France an early lead, goals from Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo secured a 2-1 victory for Spain in Munich.

Is Didier Deschamps in hot waters after Euro 2024 exit?

Throughout the match, Deschamps’ substitutions had little effect, with only five shots on target recorded. France’s struggle in open play persisted, having qualified from the group stage without scoring any goals from open play. Their fortunes didn’t improve in the knockout stages, narrowly defeating Belgium thanks to Jan Vertonghen’s own goal and advancing past Portugal on penalties after a goalless draw.

Following the loss, the French Football Federation (FFF) made a decision regarding Deschamps’ future. Philippe Diallo, president of the FFF, confirmed their support for the manager, stating, “I don’t see any reason to question his contract. The results of the past speak in his favour, and the objectives have been achieved. Didier will continue his mission.” However, Diallo also hinted at the need for improvements, adding, “the team had some areas for improvement.”

Deschamp’s stint with Les Bleus

Deschamps has managed the national team since 2012 and became only the third person to win the World Cup as both a player and manager in 2018. Under his guidance, France reached the final of the 2022 World Cup, ultimately losing to Argentina on penalties. Despite recent challenges, including Kylian Mbappe’s struggles with a protective mask due to a broken nose and Antoine Griezmann’s fitness issues, Deschamps retains the trust of the FFF.

Deschamps is now the longest-serving manager in French history and the 18th longest-serving in men’s international football history. As France prepares for future competitions, including the 2026 World Cup, Deschamps remains at the helm, tasked with addressing the team’s shortcomings and building on past successes.
