Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson loses battle to cancer, passes away at 76

Sven-Goran Eriksson, in his career as a manager for various clubs had numerous trophies to his name.

Former England manager, Sweden’s Sven-Goran Eriksson passed away, aged 76. The veteran coach, who coached teams like Manchester City, Leicester City, and AS Roma breathed his last in the wee hours of Monday. The Swede had revealed this January, that he had pancreatic cancer, and he had “at best a year to live”.

Eriksson was England’s first overseas coach and was at the helm from 2001 to 2006, where he took the team to the quarters in three major trophies. After hanging his boots as a player, he went on to first coach Degerfors in 1977, and then some time later switched sides to Gothenburg. It was there, that he won his first title, two Swedish Cups and the UEFA Cup.

That was just the beginning of his journey, as he made way to Portugal next, where he managed Benfica. As far as the Italian clubs are concerned, he was responsible for Roma, Fiorentina, Lazio and Sampdoria as well. In Italy, he won seven titles, and also won a Serie A title. At different times, he coached legendary players like David Bekham, Steve Gerrard, and Wayne Rooney.

What Sven-Goran Eriksson’s Family Said

The Eriksson’s family said in a statement, “After a long illness, SGE died during the morning at home surrounded by family. The closest mourners are daughter Lina; son Johan with wife Amana and granddaughter Sky; father Sven; girlfriend Yanisette with son Alcides; brother Lars-Erik with wife Jumnong. The family asks for respect for their wish to mourn in private and not be contacted.”
