Eden Hazard, former Chelsea and Real Madrid player, has announced his retirement from the sport at the age of 32. The Belgian star revealed the news in an Instagram post. He went on to say that he had decided it was time to call it quits on his profession.
“You must listen to yourself and say stop at the right time. After 16 years and more than 700 matches played, I have decided to end my career as a professional footballer. I was able to realise my dream, I have played and had fun on many pitches around the world.” Eden Hazard wrote on Instagram.
The 32-year-old has been without a club since leaving Real Madrid in the summer. Hazard has only made 76 appearances for the club in four seasons.
Following his departure from Real Madrid, it appears that a return to elite-level football is out of the question. As a result, Hazard made many proposals that he retire his boots for good.
At Chelsea, Hazard won the PFA Player of the Year title and the Premier League twice. With Real Madrid, he also won the Champions League and two La Liga championships.
During his time in Madrid, the Belgian winger sustained 18 different ailments, keeping him out of 95 matches for club and country. This was in stark contrast to his tenure at Chelsea, when the Belgian suffered injuries very infrequently. He made 352 appearances with the Blues, scoring 110 goals and dishing out 92 assists.
After departing Madrid, the winger apparently had some English teams interested in him. However, doubts regarding his physical condition appeared to be a serious roadblock.
